Wavertree Citizens Advice Bureau - Which Benefit?

Main Non-contributory benefits

a) Child Benefit

For every child (but check residence rules).

b) Disability Living Allowance

For disabled people under 65 with care and/or mobility needs. There is a mobility component for people who are unable to walk or have difficulty walking, and a care component for people who need someone to help with their care.

c) Attendance Allowance

For people aged 65 or over with care needs.

d) Carers Allowance

For people who are caring for a disabled person for at least 35 hours a week. Although it is not means-tested, a carer cannot get it if they earn too much. It is not available to people in full-time education.

e) Severe Disability Allowance

For people who are not able to work because of sickness or disability, but who do not qualify for incapacity benefit. From April 2001, this is no longer available to new claimants. However, people may be able to claim Incapacity benefit without having to meet the contribution conditions if they became sick or disabled when they were young.

f) Industrial Injuries Benefits

For people who have had an accident at work, or who have a prescribed disease caused by work in particular occupations.

g) Guardians Allowance

For people looking after children who are effectively orphans.
