Non-contributory benefits

Principles

These are benefits to help with special circumstances or extra needs. They do not depend on contributions and are not means-tested. Apart from child benefit, they are mainly aimed at meeting some of the extra costs of being disabled or caring for a disabled person. To get them, you have to prove that you meet specific criteria.

You can get some of these benefits at the same time as each other, or at the same time as some means-tested or contributory benefits or tax credits.

Most of these benefits have residence rules that say how long you have to have been in this country before you are entitled to the benefit.
